Quote:*What is the Hazard Perception Test?*
The hazard perception part of the theory test was brought in in November 2001, because of the concerns about accident figures amongst new drivers. The idea behind the hazard perception test is that it trains new drivers how to spot hazards before they occur. Basically the test consists of watching 14 video clips of road scenes, in which there are 15 hazards to identify. There may be more than 15 potential hazards, but only 15 will develop into actual hazards. In other words, you score points when noticing hazards which, as a driver, would cause you to take action, such as swerving or stopping the car. The test is scored out of 75, and you need 44 points to pass.

Personally I was very worried about this test, because I've heard many horror stories about it. For example, if you click too soon you don't score any points. If you don't click quickly enough you may miss the entire 'scoring window'. Also, if you click too often, it's classed as cheating and you'll fail that clip.
Obviously, with the test being a visual one, it's hard to practice it just by reading a book. Thankfully there are now several dvds and cd roms with hazard perception clips on for you to watch and test yourself with.

*How do I use the DSA Guide to Hazard Perception DVD?*
You can watch the dvd either on your dvd player or on your pc, if you have a dvd drive, and you can also watch it on your PS2, or Xbox if you have a DVD movie playback controller. This particular dvd starts by explaining what the various symbols on-screen mean. A house sign takes you back to the main menu, a car symbol takes you to a short quiz so you can test how much you've learnt (there are also motorbike and lorry symbols for people taking those tests), the i symbol gives you extra information, a ? symbol takes you to a multiple choice quiz and the symbol of a man is information for your driving instructor. Once you know what all the symbols mean you can begin to watch the dvd.

*Chapters.*
The dvd is split into eight chapters: -

1. Defining hazards - which discusses possible hazards on the roads such as road and weather conditions.
2. Looking for clues - which draws your attention to clues which often give information about road conditions ahead.
3. Using the mirrors - this helps to teach you the mirror-signal-manoeuvre routine.
4. Scanning and planning -which helps you to search the road ahead of you to help you deal with difficult situations.
5. Prioritising - uses knowledge learned in previous chapters to help you decide which hazards take priority and which may require you to change your speed or direction.
6. Cutting down risks - helps you develop ways of giving yourself more space and time to react to situations.
7. Responding - you're shown a number of clips so you can practice picking out hazards in various road scenes.
8. At the test centre - which discusses how both parts of the theory test work.
*The Interactive Test.*

At the end of the dvd you are given a four digit code. Once you have this you can access the interactive hazard perception test, which lets you practice clicking the screen when you see hazards. There are ten clips in total for you to try. After each clip you are given a score out of five, and then are shown the clip again with a commentary telling you where the hazards are.
