Not only is this interesting on how to build a LEED home, THE Mike Holmes trade mark motto “Build it the Right way = if it's not done right then it's just not worth doing,” but it can also withstand 200 mile per/hr hurricane winds & window glass that won’t break “if hit by a 2x4 going at 80 mph.” (so what is the price of this home?? It’s never told!!!)
Also the show explores what happened in the Lower 9th Ward, why the levees failed (It was not the hurricane that caused the most damage but the man-made levees that broke.) & why it's been so hard for the residents of this Community to recover from America's worst natural disaster.
There is good film footage of the storm, after the storm & what the Lower 9th Ward looks like now in 2008.
This is an all-round interesting documentary. (After editing out 90 min of commercials, I hope you enjoy this documentary. LOL.)
This home is being built for Gloria Guy, a 68 yr old (4'11") including 6 of her grandchildren (6-17 yrs) that live with her. She is a mother of 5 (two have passed away) with 15 grandchildren & 14 great grandchildren. In 1982 Earl her husband died at the age of 42 leaving Gloria to raise their 5 children alone. Hurricane Katrina caused Gloria to lose her home, all her possessions, her neighbours, friends & her life as she knew it. She lost everything, except her family which she had sent to be evacuated while she stayed. After the storm she was rescued from the top of a neighbour’s roof top, after her home had been swept away. She has been waiting 3 yrs to come back to the place she can call home again. Interesting note: On the anniversary date of Katrina 3 yrs ago, Hurricane Gustav was to make landfall in the same area with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph. Damage in Louisiana totaled to $4.3 billion.
Mike Holmes & his crew finished building the home on Aug. 29 ’08 & they were able to fly home to Canada the next morning before the storm hit. On August 31, that afternoon, 1.9 million people had evacuated southern Louisiana, with 200,000 being residents of New Orleans alone, making it the largest evacuation in the history of Louisiana. Gustav made landfall along the Louisiana coast with 105 mph (170 km/h) winds at about 9:30 a.m August 31.
Gloria Guy’s home survived the storm without any damage whatsoever being done to the inside or outside. In the aftermath, the Canadian government sent a C-17 airlifter, with a medical team, from CFB Trenton to assist in the evacuation of New Orleans and two C-130 Hercules airlift planes from Greenwood, Nova Scotia and from Winnipeg, Manitoba. The United Kingdom sent HMS Iron Duke and RFA Wave Ruler to provide emergency assistance and assess the damage caused by Gustav.
