Description:
From one of the most creative, daring and provocative British writers, Lipstick on Your Collar was the last work by television writer, playwright and screenwriter Dennis Potter to be produced during his lifetime. He died of cancer in June, 1994. Regarded by some as one of Dennis Potter's more conventional works, Lipstick on Your Collar is not without graphic sex and violence, as well as Potter's characteristic flashes of dreamlike imagery.
The main story takes place in 1956 in a British Military Intelligence Office in Whitehall, where a small group of foreign affairs analysts find their quiet existence disrupted by the Suez Crisis. Part musical, part romantic comedy, part male fantasy, this tale focuses on two young British servicemen, Francis Francis (Giles Thomas) and Mick Hopper (Ewan McGregor), working in the office as Russian translators.
Mick, who loves rock and roll and dreams of becoming a drummer, is bored with his job and whiles away his days in fantasies that involve his work colleagues breaking into song and dance routines. Francis, who stays with his aunt (Maggie Steed) and uncle Fred (Bernard Hill), develops a crush (or should we say obsession?) on his beautiful upstairs neighbour Sylvia (Louise Germaine) who happens to be married to Francis’s bullying superior, Corporal Berry (Douglas Henshall).
Meanwhile, the War Office buzzes with rumours of a Suez Canal invasion, but the daydreaming soldiers Francis and Hopper are preoccupied with their visions of singing, dancing, and beautiful women.
Some of the side themes include the influence of American rock and roll on English society, the gulf between the senior analysts, who are regular army officers, and the conscripted lower ranks, the work of Russian playwright Chekhov, and the appreciation of opulent theatre pipe organs. The unusual context – a military culture transplanted into a civil-service office environment – reflects Potter's own national service during WWII.
