We follow Mildred Hubble in her first year at Weirdsister College, a university for students of magic. Similar to her adventures at Cackle's, Mildred usually messes up, but saves the day at the end.
The series has a darker side than The Worst Witch, with evil creatures and a possible doomsday.
Weirdsister College in Cambridge is an institution where successful students from magical academies and institutes of Great Britain can further their magical education, and where qualified doctors and professors can teach and (along with the students) push the boundaries of magic with experiments.

Only Mildred Hubble (Georgie Sherrington) & Ethel Hallow (Fliss Jones) survived the move from Cackles's Academy to Weirdsister College for series 4.
It's implied the rest of the "Cackles" cast went off to different colleges and universities, but they are never mentioned again.
There is a very brief appearance by Miss Hardbroom (Kate Duchene)in episode 1 and Milly's old Cackles Academy mate Enid Nightshade (Jessica Fox) guest stars in episode 10.
But the most jarring change was the re-casting of Fliss Jones as Milly's arch nemesis Ethel AGAIN.(Fliss played Ethel in series 1, left the series and was replaced by Katy Allen for the 2nd and 3rd series).
